Legionella Water Testing

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services issued a policy memorandum June 02, 2017 requiring healthcare facilities to implement a water management program. These water management policies include procedures to help prevent the development and transmission of communicable diseases and infections. While all diseases are a concern, the increase in Legionnaires’ Disease is specified in the memorandum.


The North Dakota Department of Health, Division of Microbiology, is offering Legionella testing services. Please contact the laboratory at laboratory@nd.gov for collection kits.

Currently there are no established regulatory levels if Legionella is detected. The laboratory will report the presence or absence of Legionella until further guidance is issued.
