North Dakota Continued Competency Pilot Program
Hours Required For Recertification
The NREMT provides National EMS Certification at four levels of care. All four levels require state licensure through the Division of EMS and Trauma (DEMST) as well, in order to legally work as an EMS provider within the state.
1. Emergency Medical Responder (NREMR)
2. Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT)
3. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (NRAEMT)
4. Paramedic (NRP)
DEMST provides state level certification at two levels of care (non-nationally registered).
1. Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) (under 18 years of age)
(under 18 years of age)
The required hours of education vary at each level of care based upon the complexity of maintenance of continued competency, the invasiveness of the care provided, and the depth and breadth of their knowledge base.
The following chart lists the required number of hours of education at each level of National EMS Certification / ND state licensure.
Topics included in the National Continued Competency Requirements are changed every five years based upon input obtained via a National Continuous Competency Assurance Program assembly convened by the NREMT.
DEMST will follow the same requirements for those non-nationally registered EMS personnel. Documentation will be required on the Non-Nationally Registered EMR, AFAA and EMT Continuing Education Report form to be submitted along with an EMS Registration form to DEMST any time after January 1 of the year of expiration.
