In 2016, 82 percent of North Dakota mothers initiated breastfeeding reaching the Health People 2020 goal of 81.9 percent.
Birth Certificate Data:
Breastfeeding Initiation rates by birth hospital – This data is gathered from the birth certificate in response to the question, “Was infant breastfed at time of discharge?"
Newborn Screening Data:
This data is collected by the newborn screening program and provides percentages of breastfeeding initiation and breastfed infants supplemented with formula in the hospital, for hospitals reporting 50 or more annual births.
